小豆島では井戸のある家が多く、かつては地下水が主な生活用水として利用されてきた。
所有者の高齢化などによって建物は取り壊されても、井戸はそのまま残されることが多いようで、島内の至る所に空き地と井戸の組み合わさった空間があった。井戸は生活の道具であり、調査を続けていると、かつての暮らしがその底に眠っているような気がした。
今では使われなくなった井戸に鏡のユニットを設置し、井戸の中を覗き込む巨大な万華鏡を制作してみた。デヴィッド・ブリュースター卿が万華鏡を発明したのは、今からちょうど200年前(1816)のことである。
There are many houses with a well in Shodo Island and groundwater was used as main water resources for domestic use. Even buildings had been demolished due to aging owners, the well often seemed to be left and there were many vacant lots with the well all over the island. The well is a tool of living and I felt like a former living is resting at the bottom of the well as I continued my research.
I installed mirror units in unused wells and created huge kaleidoscopes to look into the well. Sir David Brewster invented kaleidoscope in 1816, exactly 200 years ago from now.
